N-221.
Sir,

GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
14th May, 1924,
I have the honour to inform you that I have
had under consideration the work of the Colonial Veterinary Surgeon in this Colony and to recommend that en assistent be now appointed to him.
The general expansion of the Colony, increased population and the somewhat congested conditions
of industrial life necessitate additional facilities such as slaughter-houses, lairage and markets, and as you are aware provision has been made for such works in the Estimate of Public Works during the last few years.
Even to-day the supervision of slaughtering
and the inspection of meat in the markets is more than can
be accomplished by one man and when any emergency such as an outbreak of disease occurs, the system is greatly
hampered.
I enclose the usual form of particulars and
should be glad if a qualified Veterinary Surgeon could be appointed. I have omitted particulars of the salary of the office but I would suggest that a scale of £500 rising by annual increments of £20 to £600 per annum might be suitable. If necessary a higher salary could be offered
subject
